Proposed Waterville Ordinance

We are working with Waterville resident’s and businesses to craft a plastic shopping and grocery bag ordinance that works for Waterville. Here is out current thinking:

  • A ban on plastic shopping and grocery bags only at Waterville businesses with 10,000 square feet or more of retail space.

  • The ban would apply to Waterville grocery stores including Hannaford, Shaws, and Caswells. it would also apply to Walmart, Mardens, Home Depot, Staples, Dollar General, K Mart, Rite Aid and a few other businesses. This is where the majority of plastic shopping and grocery bags are distributed.

  • The ban would not apply to plastic bags used for meat or produce at the grocery store, dry cleaning bags, or newspaper sleeves.

  • Paper shopping bags are not addressed in the ordinance and would not be affected. They would still be available at checkout.
