We are working with Waterville resident’s and businesses to craft a plastic shopping and grocery bag ordinance that works for Waterville. Here is out current thinking:
A ban on plastic shopping and grocery bags only at Waterville businesses with 10,000 square feet or more of retail space.
The ban would apply to Waterville grocery stores including Hannaford, Shaws, and Caswells. it would also apply to Walmart, Mardens, Home Depot, Staples, Dollar General, K Mart, Rite Aid and a few other businesses. This is where the majority of plastic shopping and grocery bags are distributed.
The ban would not apply to plastic bags used for meat or produce at the grocery store, dry cleaning bags, or newspaper sleeves.
Paper shopping bags are not addressed in the ordinance and would not be affected. They would still be available at checkout.
